A brief history of Wayfair

Wayfair was founded as CSN in 2002 by entrepreneurial partners Niraj Shah and Steve Conine as a two-person company with a makeshift headquarters in Conine’s nursery in Boston, Mass. Originally known as CSN (a mix of the two founders’ initials), the company started with only one website, racksandstands.com, which sold bookshelves, magazine racks and storage units. By 2003, the company added a patio furniture/garden goods site to its portfolio and moved headquarters to accommodate its growing number of employees, now at over a dozen.

Since Conine’s house no longer had the space for them, the new headquarters was an office in downtown Boston. Presumably, it was well-furnished.

By 2011, CSN had over 200 websites, the vast majority of them targeting a very specific niche, like cookware or atomic clocks. The sites were a success, and sales were driving all over the world, but further success seemed like it could only come from creating a unified brand and driving all traffic to one website, instead of splitting it with over 200. Therefore, on September 1st 2011, the company rebranded as Wayfair and consolidated its niche websites into wayfair.com and its affiliates.

At the time of writing, Wayfair is the largest online furniture retailer in the US and the 33rd-largest retailer of any kind. In 2014 it raised over $1.3 billion and was valued at being worth $2 billion.
