Do I Need A Visa To Study In The UK?
You must apply for a student visa if you are a person from outside of the European Economic Area wishing to be educated in the United Kingdom. These are countries within the European Union but also include Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein as well.
If you are only coming over for a short time (e.g. to do a training course) you will be eligible for a Student Visitor visa. You can stay for six months or eleven months with this visa depending on the length of your course. The former costs £85 and the latter costs £150. You will not be able to extend this visa. Similarly, the visa does not allow you to work, marry or bring family members with you. Applications will take 3 weeks and should be done 3 months prior to your departure. Call the UKBA contact number for more info.
If you wish to stay in the United Kingdom for longer to study, there is also a Tier 4 student visa. You have to be offered a place on a course to apply for this visa. You also have to have some understanding of the English language, have enough money to support your stay, and come from a country outside of the aforementioned European Economic Area. The duration of this visa depends on the length of your course. Furthermore, this visa allows you to work in some circumstances. A Tier 4 visa costs £310 and should be done several months in advance. Call the Border Agency UK number for help.

A History Of The UK Border Agency
The UK Border Agency was once the border control agency of the Home office, a ministerial department of the British Government. The UKBA became a full agency in April 2009 overhauling the old system. It saw the agency take on full responsibility of matters pertaining to border control, customs and immigration. Powers were given to the agency following the Royal Assent of the Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Act of 2009. In the years that followed, the UK Border Agency oversaw more than 20,000 members of staff located across over one hundred different countries.
However, things began to fall apart when the Parliamentary Ombudsman investigated the poor service, enormous backlogs and high volume of complaints against the UK Border Agency. Many of the complaints regarding asylum and residence were upheld by the aforementioned Ombudsman. In 2013, the poor figures forced the Home Affairs Select Committee to produce a scathing report into their work.
Home Secretary Teresa May later announced that UKBA would be scrapped and the powers would return to the government’s Home Office. In March of that year, the UK Border Agency was split into two organisations: UK Visas And Immigration.
