A Brief History of Screwfix

Screwfix contact

Screwfix began in Somerset in 1979 as “Woodscrew Supply Company.” At this time, the company’s catalogue consisted of one single page offering a variety of screws, and it wasn’t until 1987 that this increased to several pages offering a variety of trade goods and DIY supplies under the name “Handimail”.

In 1992, the first catalogue under the name “Screwfix” appeared, and this heralded an era of massive growth for the company, during which it expanded across the UK and moved to a much larger headquarters in Pen Mill, Yeovil, Somerset. In 1999, the company launched its first website, immediately before being acquired by Kingfisher plc, a multinational conglomerate of home-improvement companies with a presence across the world. In January 2000, the company announced revenues of £58 million, and continued to expand both its range and its products. Sales continued to skyrocket, with £100 million in 2001 and £185 million in 2002, a rate of growth that saw them named Retailer of the Year and allowed them to open an enormous, fully automated distribution centre in Stoke-on-Trent.

At the time of writing (2016) Screwfix has 450 stores across the UK and plans to open a further 300 in the next two years.
