The RAC is a roadside assistance company, but the initials actually stand for Royal Automobile Club. It was founded back in 1897, before incorporating as RAC Motoring Services Limited much later on in 1978. The Royal Automobile Club sold off this “associate section” in 1999. After several acquisitions from various businesses which also sold it on, as of 2015, CVC Capital Partners and GIC Private Limited own equal stakes in the RAC. It is in competition with other roadside assistance providers in the UK such as the AA and Green Flag. The RAC has over 8 million members and around 1,500 patrols which attend more than 2 million private and business motorist breakdowns every year.

They can answer any questions you might have about Breakdown Cover, from vehicle eligibility to whether or not the cover will apply to a particular situation or person. It’s better to make sure your cover will be adequate before you buy a membership to avoid difficulties later. Breakdown cover does not cover windscreen damage, so you should enquire about insurance options which go hand-in-hand with breakdown cover. RAC Membership
This could be regarding problems with your online MyRAC account, or checking the details of your cover. Call if you need to make any changes to your membership, such as adding or removing extra members, upgrading your cover level, or replacing a vehicle on the policy. You can call to request a replacement membership card if you lose yours, or to report any issues with your policy documents. If you decide to cancel your RAC Breakdown membership, then call to request this and find out what you still need to pay. Cancel within 14 days with no claims to get the full refund.
Payments & Renewals
When you pay for your membership by debit or credit card, you have three options. You can pay annually, pay monthly, or split the cost into four equal monthly payments. When you choose to pay monthly, there will be an additional administration fee. You should contact RAC Breakdown if there is a payment issue, because a failed Direct Debit could cause your policy to be cancelled. This is not always possible, depending on your membership type. European Cover
Standard personal breakdown cover generally only covers breakdowns within the UK. If you are taking your car into Europe for holiday travel, you should make sure that you are properly covered for the countries you visit. You can purchase European Breakdown Cover as a standalone option whenever you need it, or add it onto your UK Breakdown Cover policy. It is only available to buy when you are in the UK, so buy it before you leave and allow enough time to receive the policy documents to take with you.
Business Cover
Business Breakdown Cover is different to personal breakdown cover because it applies to any driver of all your specified business vehicles. This will save your business time and money if one of your vehicles breaks down. RAC can fix most vehicles at the roadside and keep your business moving. Business customers also have free access to the online Business Club for easy fleet management and other benefits.
Complaints
Even with so many years of experience, sometimes RAC Breakdown can let you down. Depending on the subject of your complaint, you will need to provide all of the details plus your membership number and/or vehicle registration. If it is not a quick fix, your customer service adviser will aim to resolve it by the end of the following business day. For complex problems, this may take 5 days or longer. RAC will let you know when to expect a resolution. If you are still dissatisfied when you receive a final response, then take the complaint to the European Commission Online Dispute Resolution Service.
