New LED Lights Could Stop Insects Biting Us
April 24th, 2015

A team of researchers is experimenting with the production of LED lights that don’t only provide ample lighting, but can also ward off insects. The lights will still appear as functional white lights that can benefit human, but with this useful added extra for outdoor lighting, especially in the summer months.

The lights could be particularly beneficial in countries were insect bites don’t just mean an itchy and annoying spot, certain types of bug bites can cause infections of some nasty illnesses and diseases, such as malaria.

Most energy efficient bulbs and electronics tend to emit a blue type of light that can attract insects. The researchers have combined LED of differing wavelengths and turned down the amount of blue and green light that is so attractive to the bugs and the result was that the light look white to the human eye and attracted around 20% less insects.
