What is Housing Benefit?
Housing Benefit helps you pay your rent if you are currently surviving on a low income. To find out if you are eligible, call the Housing Benefit phone number. Depending on your income and circumstances, Housing Benefit can cover part or all of your rent. You can apply if you are unemployed or working. To be eligible, you must pay rent, be on a low income or benefits and have savings below £16,000. If you live with a partner, only one of you is entitled to housing benefit. You cannot get housing benefit if you have savings over £16,000, live in the home of a close relative, are a full time student (with the exception of if you’re disabled or a carer), or if you are an asylum seeker. There is no set amount of housing benefit, the amount you receive depends on: if you rent privately or from the council, whether you have unoccupied rooms or not and your income. For example, if you live in a one bedroom property, you would get around £250 a week. You can apply for housing benefit through the Job Centre, but as a general rule your local council will decide whether you are eligible or not and contact you.
