What Can I Do If I Am Unhappy With A Decision?

You have the option to ask for your Budgeting Loan decision to be reviewed if you are not satisfied with it. In order for you to do this, you will need to write to Jobcentre Plus within 28 days of receiving the decision and state why you think it as an incorrect decision.

If you still feel the wrong decision has been made, even after the review, you can ask for a further review. This will be done by the office of the Independent Case Examiner and shouldn’t take any longer than 21 days

Loan

What Is A Budgeting Loan?

A Budgeting Loan is an interest free payment available to those who have been receiving income related benefits for a minimum of 26 weeks. It can be used to help pay the costs of essentials such as furniture, clothing, moving costs or debts for hire purchases.

The smallest amount that is available to borrow is £100. As they have no interest, you will only pay back what you borrow and you typically have 104 weeks to repay the loan in full.

The repayments will be made from your benefits. If you stop receiving benefits, you will have to agree to pay another way.

As long as you have been receiving income-related benefits for the last 26 weeks, you can apply for a loan. You have to still be getting these benefits when your application is assessed.

How Much Will I Get?

The amount of money you get will depend on your current circumstances:

  • If you are single, you can get up to £348
  • If you are part of a couple, you can get up to £464
  • If you have children, you can get up to £812

The other factors that can influence your Budgeting Loan decision are:

  • Whether or not you can pay the loan back
  • If you have any savings that come to a total of £1,000 or more (or £2,000 if you or your partner are over the age of 62)

You are not allowed to owe the Social Fund more than £1,500. The Social Fund includes Budgeting Loans and Crisis Loans.

The loan is paid into your account, usually a bank account.

How Do I Know If I Am Eligible?

In order for you to qualify for a Budgeting Loan, either you or your partner have to have been getting at least one of these benefits for a minimum of 26 weeks:

  • Income Support
  • Income-Based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income-Related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Pension Credit

You have to still be receiving one of these benefits when your application is being assessed.
