Due to a lack of training opportunities, butchers in the United Kingdom are losing a generation, a new report reveals.
A report, which was commissioned by EBLEX, highlighted that the amount of butchers found across the country had gone from 15,000 in 1990 to approximately 6,000 today, a fall of 60%. Although the numbers have stabilised over the last few years, while consumer preferences and shopping habits have been evolving, there are still a number of challenges present in the sector.
The report that had been based on a survey of nearly 300 independent butchers and farm shops, along with a number of interviews, revealed that 90% of those asked said they were facing difficulties and trouble in finding and recruiting trained butchers.
The limited amount of trained butchers available for hire is making it difficult for the industry to continue to flourish. The main reason for this drought is a lack of young people going into this particular profession as well as a reduction in apprenticeships being offered.
